EDEN SCHMEICHEL, PHD

Eden Schmeichel, PhD

I came to College Station after extensive training at Case Western Reserve, at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and following a post-doctoral position at Florida State University. Since arriving in College Station in 2005, I have worked at the Texas A&M Employee Assistance program and have served as a consultant to the Student Counseling Service at Texas A&M and to the TAMU College of Veterinary Medicine student services. In addition, for several years I provided psychological services (therapy, assessment, and staff consultation) for residents of long-term care facilities in Brazos County.

As my training indicates, I have extensive experience with adults from a variety of life stages, from young adults to seniors. I have worked with a wide range of psychological distress, including depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship problems. In my practice, I place a strong emphasis on the relationship between therapist and client and the opportunity it provides for insight. The collaborative working relationship that develops in therapy can provide an environment that is safe for the client to gain insight and confront potentially maladaptive patterns. In addition to my emphasis on insight and the therapeutic relationship, my approach to the practice of psychotherapy is to use what works. In therapy I commonly draw on strategies from a variety of theoretical approaches including cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and client-centered psychology. Experience has taught me that it is important to be flexible and to recognize that each person is unique and has different strengths.
